A trumped-up story sold to the Cheyenne Clarion by a man named John Watson, posing as John Surratt, solely for the purpose of a fast fortune. John Watson met his death because of it. But the name of John Surratt was not dead. His name was to pop up again in the life of Bat Masterson, the man who became a legend in his own time.
