Malcolm Garnett: Wrong! Wrong wrong wrong wrong wrong! This is nostalgia! Not parody, it's not burlesque, not camp! It's whimsy!... You people obviously do not understand what we're portraying here. These are the frollicing Forties. Simple years, clean years! World War Two. A war with a heart! A war that everybody could understand!... This is a war you came out of the theater whistling from. What is this, an amateur show? What am I running here? How did you ever get into showbusines, you kids, what are you, dummies or something? You know the idea of this number or don't you know the idea? America was clean and unpolluted! We were wonderful! Everybody liked us then!... And that's what the public wants to see again. Not drugs and long hair and beads, they want short hair. Zoot suits with reet fleets. Clean, young people styling. What I am trying to say is, to make this look sincere... and make it look simple!
