Title Card:
At the beginning of the last century, the United States declared war on Spain. They pledged to free the island of Cuba, ninety miles to their south, from colonial rule. It was thus that the American troops came to yet another Spanish colony, half a world away. They decided to stay.

Locsin:
The general says we must obey the call of the nation.

Nenong:
You obey me first, the the call of the nation.

Locsin:
I thought God was first.

Nenong:
Your mother is in charge of religion, ask her.

US Soldier:
I was supposed to be over here killing Spaniards.

Lynch:
Kill some in your dreams.

Azalea:
God will guide us through this time.

Rafael:
God is busy some place else.

Azalea:
[planting rice] It's been so long since we did this. Remember?

Rafael:
I remember you were working right ahead of me. I got to watch your behind all day long.

Azalea:
Rafael!

Rafael:
It blocks more of the view these days.

Azalea:
Not in front of these men!

Locsin:
Why does he hate the chinos so much? He has a Chinese name.

Policarpio:
You have answered your own question.

Chief:
[pointing at newly hung telegraph wire] On this wire flows the words of the Americans, like fallen leaves on a river, all the way to Manila. And soon the wires will spread to ever corner of the island.

Villager:
And what can they have to say?

Gil:
[to village girl] You're awful pretty for... well, ya know, for one of you.

Chief:
This democracy is not so bad, is it?

Rafael:
Not bad. If the Americans would do away, I'd love to try it.

Azalea:
You're a lucky man.

Rafael:
Good luck always makes me worry.

Lynch:
[to young rebel pretending to be a villager] This is your lucky day, Amigo.

Azalea:
