Below the Sea

Steve 'Mac' McCreary:
You got ants in your pants! What difference does it make if we get there now or a month from now?

Karl Schlemmer:
If you wait fifteen years for something, maybe you get ants in your pants, too.

Steve 'Mac' McCreary:
Ah, fish don't eat gold, not even goldfish. It'll keep.

Diane Templeton:
[shows Steve her microscope] Here, take a look. What do you see?

Steve 'Mac' McCreary:
A lot of little maggots.

Diane Templeton:
Well take a good look. A few million years ago, one of them was you. One day, maybe a million years later, you floated upwards, you and many others. The wheels of life began to turn. A billion living things were snuffed out. A few were launched into a new cycle, you among them, because you were strong. That's how life began. Ages went by, and you got the cells and the muscles that enabled you to think and dream and smile. You really became human when you learned how to smile.

Steve 'Mac' McCreary:
Ah, you read all that out of book. You don't know what life is. You've only played around with it and read about it, but you never lived it!

Diane Templeton:
But you didn't let me finish. There are millions of years between you and what you just saw under that microscope, but as far as you're concerned, it was a waste of time, because you don't know *how* to smile.

[last lines]

Steve 'Mac' McCreary:
It cost me a million bucks to go down there after you.

Diane Templeton:
Well?

Steve 'Mac' McCreary:
You're the kind of girl that's gonna get in trouble all her life. Anybody that trails along with you is just looking for trouble.

Diane Templeton:
Well?

Steve 'Mac' McCreary:
That's the kind of a girl you are... and that's the kind of a guy I am. Always looking for trouble. [kisses her]

Steve 'Mac' McCreary:
...If you ever try to cross me you're gonna land where that chest is - at the bottom of the sea.

Karl Schlemmer:
You don't have to threaten me.

Steve 'Mac' McCreary:
That ain't a threat. It's what the weather mugs call a forecast.

[Diane has brought Steve into the ship's darkroom, ostensibly to demonstrate her competence in the photographic arts. Impulsively, he grabs her and kisses her passionately]

Diane Templeton:
[flirtatiously] Does this come under the heading of science or art? Whichever it is, you have definite possibilities. [He releases her from the clutch and spins her around. Her tone changes to anger] Disappointed?

Steve 'Mac' McCreary:
[snarling] Yeah.

Diane Templeton:
Why?

Steve 'Mac' McCreary:
I wanted to find out if you were the sort of woman I figured ya, and y'are.

Diane Templeton:
I suppose you'd've liked it better if I'd slapped your face.

Steve 'Mac' McCreary:
Yeah, I would! [she immediately slaps him hard. After a moment of shock, he smiles]

Diane Templeton:
Why, good heavens! You do know how to smile!

[they are interrupted by a knock at the door; Steve is being summoned by the skipper]

Steve 'Mac' McCreary:
[as he leaves] Maybe I'm wrong at that. You've got a few possibilities yourself.

[last lines]

Steve 'Mac' McCreary:
It cost me a million bucks to go down there after you.

Diane Templeton:
Well?

Steve 'Mac' McCreary:
You're the kinda girl that's gonna get in trouble all her life. Anybody that trails along with ya is just lookin' for trouble.

Diane Templeton:
Well?

Steve 'Mac' McCreary:
That's the kind of a girl you are. And that's the kind of a guy I am - always lookin' for trouble. [they kiss]
