Larry-Boy and the Rumor Weed

Larry-Boy and the Rumor Weed

Weeds are taking over Bumblyburg--flowery, talkative, sunglasses-wearing weeds that bear a striking resemblance to the clichéd blathering old ladies who enjoy nothing more than yakking about the neighbors over a game of mahjong. No, these aren't ordinary weeds; these weeds are interconnected, and they are multiplying at an alarming rate. What could cause these wild plants to bloom at such a rapid pace? Why, they're just keeping pace with the rumors that are flying around town. Only Larry-Boy can save the city. Or can he? Larry-Boy doesn't have the powers of most superheroes; in fact, his main sources of might are his suction-cup ears and an overeducated butler. Yet in this installment of VeggieTales, Larry-Boy's real skill is in teaching us that "God doesn't want us to tell stories that can hurt." In the lively series that has "Sunday morning values, and Saturday morning fun," a group of vegetables provides moral lessons for everyday life. Strong on Christian themes and light on seriousness, VeggieTales has enough humor for adults to appreciate and enough fun for the kids. While this episode may have us longing for the not-present Bob the Tomato and Silly Songs, there's still enough of the impressive computer animation and appealing story lines to make this a valuable resource for teaching kids right from wrong. --Jenny Brown

Dad Asparagus:
Laura Junior what's going on? What's that thing that has Alfred?

Junior:
It's a big weed Dad but didn't you hear? Alfred's really a dangerous robot with laser eyes!

Dad Asparagus:
What who said that?

Nezzer:
It's true he's gonna take over the world!

Dad Asparagus:
Now where did you hear that?

Nezzer:
The weed told me! Yeah isn't that right?

Dad Asparagus:
Did you make up this story?

The Rumor Weed:
What? I'm a rumor weed! I never make anything up! I heard it from two very reliable sources! RIGHT, KIDS?

Dad Asparagus:
Junior? Laura? Do you have something to tell me?

Laura Carrot:
Well, we heard Mr. Alfred tell you that he needed to... recharge his batteries.

Junior Asparagus:
So we thought... he must be a robot. Right?

Dad Asparagus:
Oh, kids, that was a figure of speech!

Junior Asparagus:
A what?

Dad Asparagus:
Sometimes grown ups say things that really mean something else. When Mr. Alfred said he needed to recharge his batteries, he really meant that he was tired, and needed to go home and rest. That's all. Listen, if you hear something about someone that sounds bad, or even just weird, you should ask them about it. Or ask your mom or dad. But don't spread rumors. Even if it's true, God doesn't want us to tell stories that can hurt, He wants us to spread nice words.

Junior:
So Mr. Alfred's NOT a robot?

Dad Asparagus:
No Mr. Alfred is a very nice man (Flowers start blooming)

Laura:
Did you see that?

Junior:
Do ya think?

Laura:
We can save Alfred by spreading some nice words! Come on!
