Live and Let Die

Live and Let Die

Roger Moore was introduced as James Bond in this 1973 action movie featuring secret agent 007. More self-consciously suave and formal than predecessor Sean Connery, he immediately reestablished Bond as an uncomplicated and wooden fellow for the feel-good '70s. This film also marks a deviation from the more character-driven stories of the Connery years, a deliberate shift to plastic action (multiple chases, bravura stunts) that made the franchise more of a comic book or machine. If that's not depressing enough, there's even a good British director on board, Guy Hamilton (Force 10 from Navarone). The story finds Bond taking on an international drug dealer (Yaphet Kotto), and while that may be superficially relevant, it isn't exactly the same as fighting supervillains on the order of Goldfinger. --Tom Keogh

What about "A small man of limited means who lost a fight with a chicken" or something like that.... David Hedison wrote the forward to the new edition of the 007 Diaries. He says that Roger Moore was his best friend. Very nice to know; imagine being in a movie with your best bud! Quite gratifying.

Also, can miss this: Moore says the feet in the bathroom are not his. He was appalled they were a stunt-man's flat feet, tee hee. Btw, Connery had flat feet. I noted this in a photo of You Only Live Twice during the bojitsu practice scene. He's standing to the side, minus any arches. Well, cats have flat feet, too, and they walk suavely.

An interesting byline to the quotes:- The part of the knife-wielding assassin in the funeral scene was first offered to New Orleans legend ,trumpeter Kid Thomas Valentine who turned it down. Thomas,it transpired, had been involved involved in a barroom fight where knives were used and he “ don’t want to stir up them po-lice”. The part was subsequently given to trumpeter Alvin Alcorn.
