The year: 1860. A newspaper advertisement: Wanted - young expert horsemen, good moral character, ready to endure severe hardships. Their job: carry the mail 2000 miles between St. Joe and Sacramento against the impossible barriers of terrain, weather, Indians... and time.

[to Marie and Pierre who are driving a buckboard many miles to Fort Kearney]

Donovan:
Have a nice trip - watch out for ruts, rattlesnakes and Indians!

[When he learns that Clark is approaching, Pierre pulls a derringer from his pocket]

Marie D'Arcy:
Put that away! Your specialty's handling cards; mine's handling men.

Marie D'Arcy:
Why Kit, we didn't know if you were alive or dead!

Brett Clark:
