The First 48

The First 48 is an American documentary television series on A&E. Filmed in various cities in the United States, the series offers an insider's look at the real-life world of homicide investigators. While the series often follows the investigations to their end, it usually focuses on their first 48 hours, thus the title. Each episode picks one or more homicides in different cities, covering each alternately, showing how detectives use forensic evidence, witness interviews and other advanced investigative techniques to identify suspects. While most cases are solved within the first 48 hours, some go on days, weeks, months, or even years after the first 48. The series was nominated for a Distinguished Documentary Achievement Award in the Continuing Series category by the International Documentary Association, eventually losing out to American Experience. By season 6, The First 48 had become the highest rated non-fiction justice series on television, and had gained critical acclaim along with controversy. The season 8 premiere, "Gone", which aired on January 1, 2009, garnered a domestic audience of 2.3 million viewers which made it the series' most watched episode, at the time.

Detective Mike Zenoni:

[about New Orleans] There hasn't been a murder in about eight days, which is pretty unusual for this city.

[first reaction when Detective Darrin Smith informs suspect that her boyfriend did not survive her "playful" stab during an argument]

Destiny Sierra Wilson:
Nooooo. I can't, I can't go to prison. I can't go.

Detective Bruce Brueggeman:
Can't believe - Hey, man, why don't anybody got any pies or any snacks laying around here today? It's Thankgiving, for **** sakes.

Acquaintance of murder victim:
I just hope y'all find who did this. This was foul. She didn't deserve that. I mean... you know, she wasn't all right, but she wasn't all wrong either.

[finds empty bottle while examining murder scene where one victim survived]

Detective Dave Walker:
What kind of vodka is this makes you get beat up and shot and keep on ticking?

Detective Mark Kennedy:
Right outta college, I went to work for Walmart as an assistant manager. That job was way too boring for my blood; most exciting part of that job was chasing shoplifters.

Joe Brown, homicide suspect:
Can I have a cigarette, please?

Detective Dave Walker:
Are you gonna be nice?

Joe Brown, homicide suspect:
Yeah. I'm tryin' to.

Detective Dave Walker:
You not gonna run away?

[camera pans to broken foot of suspect, who can barely walk]

Joe Brown, homicide suspect:
You need to go to the Apollo.

Detective Mark Kennedy:
You know what's amazing? You don't know much, and you were right there.

Terry Jackson, victim:
I was drunk, man. I drunk so much. I drunk a twelve pack, and I had a half a gallon.

"twelve pack" refers to beer, "half a gallon" refers to distilled spirits]
