Sally:
[examining Jack in his newly-finished Santa suit] You don't look like yourself, Jack. Not at all.

Jack:
Isn't that wonderful? It couldn't be more wonderful!

Sally:
[holds up the clipboard sketch of him] But you're the Pumpkin King!

Jack:
Not anymore! [breaks it over his knee] I feel SO much better now!

Sally:
[pulling a loose thread from his cuff] Jack, I know you think something's missing, but -

[accidentally catches his finger]

Jack:
[lightly] Ow.

Sally:
Sorry.

Jack:
You're right. Something *is* missing. But what? I've got the beard... the coat... the boots... the belt...

Shock, Lock, Barrel:
[come in] Jack! Jack! This time we found him!

Barrel:
This time we really did!

Jack:
This time we really did.

Lock:
He sure is big, Jack!

Barrel:
And heavy!

Santa:
[bursting out the bag] Let me out!

[the Halloween citizens gasp in awe]

Jack:
Sandy Claws - in person. What a pleasure to meet you. [prepares to shake but then looks down when their HANDS touch] Wh - ! Why, you have *hands*! You don't have claws at all!

Santa:
[dazed] Where am I?

Jack:
Surprised, aren't you? I knew you would be. You don't need to have another worry about Christmas this year.

Santa:
What?

Jack:
Consider this a vacation, Santy. A reward. It's your turn to take it easy.

Santa:
B-But there must be some mistake!

Jack:
See that he's comfortable... Just a second, fellas! Of *course*! *That's* what I'm missing! [takes Santa's hat]

Santa:
B-But...

Jack:
Thanks.

Santa:
Hang on - you just can't - [has the bag thrown over him again] Hold on! Where are we going now? [the henchmen leave with him]

Jack:
Ho, ho, *ho*! No... [monotone] Ho, ho, ho. Ho...

Sally:
This is worse than I thought. Much worse. I know! [leaves to get fog juice]

[Under the orange disk of the moon, in a place called Halloweenland, the creatures of the night are busy. Smirking jack-o-lanterns dance in the graveyard. Werewolves howl. Corpses, vampires and witches join their voices in a ghoulish chorus of glee. Tonight is their favorite night of all:
Halloween]

[And it has been a splendid one. As they gather down in the center of town to celebrate, everyone agrees on that. They also agree that such a night will not have been possible without the help of their leader, the king of Halloween, Jack Skellington]

[Everyone cheers wildly as Jack steps into the town square]

Vampire:
You were a shriek, Jack.

Werewolf:
It was terrifying!

Witch:
You're a witch's fondest dream.

[They cheer again as the Mayor claps Jack on his rickety shoulders]

Mayor:
Thanks, Jack! We owe it all to you! Why, without your leadership------

[Jack cuts him off]

Jack:
Not at all, Mayor. [But the Mayor doesn't notice that anything is wrong. He is too intent on keeping the crowd's attention focused on where it shall be; on himself]

Mayor:
It's now my pleasure to give out the wonderful prizes. Our first award goes to the vampires, for most blood drained in a single evening. Congratulations, Fanged Ones! Second prize is to the Dark Lagoon Leeches, who also have a real taste for blood...

[The crowd cheers again, and Jack takes the opportunity to slip off. It is strange, but all the applause makes him feel horrible. He needs to go someplace that will cheer him up. He heads for the graveyard]

[He is so preoccupied that he never notices the frail, melancholy figure of Sally the Rag Doll watching him. Sally is mournful, as well, and with nice reason. She has been created by the town's official Evil Scientist. Try as she may, and she has tried many times, Sally can't seem to escape from him. Although he is confined to a wheelchair, he guards her jealously]
