Detective Lt. Mike Stone:
[On stake out for a serial rapist] Doesn't matter how many times you've done it, it still makes your skin crawl. A loose screw sitting out here somewhere in the dark, or walking around in that market, watching women. And they don't even know he's there. Gotta hand it to gals like Evelyn.

Inspector Steve Keller:
To be bait for a rapist? I wouldn't do it.

Detective Lt. Mike Stone:
You don't have to worry, buddy-boy. Not with legs like yours.

Detective Lt. Mike Stone:
[Discussing the rapist] Well, what about his m.o.? Doesn't that tell you enough to translate for us?

Dr. Lenny Murchison:
What, the corner market? That's a natural, a regular game preserve. Chicks on display there like all the rest of the merchandise. Shouldn't need a psychiatrist to tell you that.

Inspector Steve Keller:
He didn't give me a chance, Mike.

Detective Lt. Mike Stone:
Happens sometimes. Maybe nobody gave him one either. Like Lenny said, "In the beginning, there was childhood."

Inspector Steve Keller:
[Looking in the direction of Susan] Who's that?

Dr. Hamill:
Oh! That's our other Susan. Susan Howard.

Dr. Hamill:
[Steve begins to approach Susan] Steve. She may not respond, she doesn't to most people.

Inspector Steve Keller:
You mean to me?

Dr. Hamill:
No, I don't mean that.

Detective Lt. Mike Stone:
[Crying out in pain] Whoa!

Jeannie Stone:
What happened?

Detective Lt. Mike Stone:
[Sucking his finger] I burned my finger.

Jeannie Stone:

[Mike and Jeannie prepare dinner] Wait a minute. You said something about wine.

Everybody in this family's gotta be a detective.

Jason Kampacalas:
[Pleading with his unforgiving father] Twenty-two million people in the State of California say the debt's been paid. Why can't you?

Inspector Steve Keller:
[after Stone releases Jason] I just hope Olsen doesn't call it a mistake.

Detective Lt. Mike Stone:
You know what?

Inspector Steve Keller:
What?

Detective Lt. Mike Stone:
If it was my first, I'd worry.

Detective Lt. Mike Stone:
I say that all our talk about "rehabilitation" is a lot of bunk! We don't give 'em a fair shot and help them when they get out.

Captain Rudy Olsen:
Like that shot he gave you?

Detective Lt. Mike Stone:
I shoulda known better.

Captain Rudy Olsen:
So you made a moral choice? You got a hide like an alligator and a heart like a marshmallow.

Detective Lt. Mike Stone:
Read this. [Stone hands Keller a note]

Inspector Steve Keller:
[Keller reading the note] Waited until 9:30, where were you? Mark.

Detective Lt. Mike Stone:
As in Mark Dylan right? The guy that you let go." [Stone pokes Keller's chest accusingly]

Detective Lt. Mike Stone:
What? No anchovies?

Inspector Steve Keller:
No. [Shakes head] Because I don't like anchovies.

Detective Lt. Mike Stone:
We always get anchovies!

Inspector Steve Keller:
No. You always get anchovies, I never get anchovies. I hate anchovies!

Detective Lt. Mike Stone:
[Mike laughs] Boy, oh boy! She must have given you a rough time. Or was it the sister?

Inspector Steve Keller:
No they were alright, I guess the questions were kind of rough. Got about as much appetite for them, as I have for this. [Gestures to pizza]

Josef Schmidt:
[shaking Irene Lupof violently to death after she makes fun of his poses] STOP THAT! I'M NOT UGLY! I'M BEAUTIFUL! THIS IS WHAT THE BODY'S SUPPOSED TO LOOK LIKE!

Inspector Steve Keller:
[When Stone stops to buy a newspaper] Checking the box scores?

Detective Lt. Mike Stone:
Yeah. If Chris knows anything about this Anthony kid, that'll make it a shutout, won't it?

Inspector Steve Keller:
Yeah, old ink fingers, three; fuzz, zip.

Chris 'Ace' Bane:
I take it personally every time a Maggie Ames gets chopped down. Mike, how much good is there left in this world? And how many people are there trying to help what little there is left? You pull Maggie's columns, any one of them, see how she looked at life, at people. Everything she wrote had a smile. Blue skies and whitecaps. Summer storms and rainbows. Snowflakes and holly. The man who killed her scrubbed all that.

Inspector Steve Keller:
[Exiting the ACT Theater after a staging of "Othello"] Play really works too, doesn't it?

Detective Lt. Mike Stone:
I guess.

Inspector Steve Keller:
You guess? Whaddaya mean, you guess? Sixteenth Century play that comes to life like that? With such contemporary values? A theme that still holds up?

Detective Lt. Mike Stone:
Holds up? I'll tell you what holds up: "Abie's Irish Rose."

Inspector Steve Keller:
"Abie's Irish Rose"? How can you even compare those two plays?

Detective Lt. Mike Stone:
They're both plays, aren't they?

Inspector Steve Keller:
Yeah.

Detective Lt. Mike Stone:
They both have actors, don't they?

Inspector Steve Keller:
You're puttin' me on.

Detective Lt. Mike Stone:
No, I'm not.

Detective Lt. Mike Stone:
Somebody call for a cop?

Inspector Steve Keller:
Well, I called for one about an hour ago, but you know they're never around when you need 'em.

Detective Lt. Mike Stone:
Well, here I am.

Detective Lt. Mike Stone:
What makes you think she wants to talk about Doyle?

Inspector Steve Keller:
What else she'd call me for? [Stone slaps Keller's face gently in a teasing manner]

Inspector Steve Keller:
Oh, c'mon will ya?

Inspector Steve Keller:
Listen, there isn't a hooker in this town that isn't splitting part or action with Doyle.

Inspector Steve Keller:
This one's smart, she knows it and she doesn't dig Doyle. She even uses words like exploited.

Detective Lt. Mike Stone:
Prostitutes of the world unite!

Inspector Steve Keller:
That's Lily Marlene! A real coyote.

Detective Lt. Mike Stone:
Where's Keller?

Inspector James 'Jim' Martin, SFPD:
I tried reaching him at home like you asked, but...

Detective Lt. Mike Stone:
I know. He's got his own night shift going.

Detective Lt. Mike Stone:
Don't you ever answer the phone?

Inspector Steve Keller:
Not when it's in the refrigerator, no.

Detective Lt. Mike Stone:
A cop's life is like looking down a long hall of mirrors. Every case shows him another part of himself. And if he hates what he's looking at, he can't do his job.

Inspector Steve Keller:
You're famous for politicking on the lawn, rapping with people, the crazies, the intellectuals. Was there any group that hated Rhinelander?

Skowlownowski:
The crazies hated him. But then they hate me too. They hate all authority. And these days, "authority" is anyone who wears a tie.

Wally Sensibaugh:
[after Stone and Keller leave, Wally turns to his wife] Nice guys. Nice guys. You know, they put a case together like you make a quilt. Piece of this, piece of that. One day they got the killer.

Detective Lt. Mike Stone:
[the arsonist is killed by the flames of a burning car] What's that they say about poetic justice?

Inspector Steve Keller:
Not my kind of poetry.

Detective Lt. Mike Stone:
Have you had breakfast yet?

Inspector Steve Keller:
No, just some juice.

Detective Lt. Mike Stone:
Come on! The treat's on me.

Inspector Steve Keller:
You're kidding?

Detective Lt. Mike Stone:
No! I'm going to treat you to the best bowl of chilli you've ever had!

Inspector Steve Keller:
Hang on... chi- chilli for breakfast?

Detective Lt. Mike Stone:
Oh come on! You're gonna love it!

Inspector Steve Keller:
Mike! Mike! Wait a minute!

Detective Lt. Mike Stone:
You've never tried it, have ya?

Inspector Steve Keller:

[Considering cops to go undercover on skid row] How do you feel about Avarczech?

Detective Lt. Mike Stone:
Are you kidding? That fuzz-faced kid? Why, he'd stick out like a harp polisher in a house full of hookers.

Inspector Steve Keller:
[Discussing Big Jake] Y'know, for a guy who's had his bell rung as many times as this Wilson, he thinks pretty good.

Detective Lt. Mike Stone:
If we're on the right track, buddy-boy, he's not the headwork; he's the muscle.

Lew Kovic Jr.:
I've heard a lot of lies. I thought I could see it in any man's face now. But maybe you're less than a man huh?

Barbara Talmadge:
I know what it is to have life inside of me, growing through me. You never taught me that, you never taught me that life and love are the same.

Inspector Steve Keller:
[Upon being awoken at dawn by Stone] Hours like this I might as well have gone to med school.

Detective Lt. Mike Stone:
Med school, huh? Going's one thing, gettin' through's another.

Inspector Steve Keller:
You pick up one more piece of paper and you're gonna be arrested for obstruction of justice.

Boyd Caldwell:
You have no right to intimidate...

Detective Lt. Mike Stone:
You wanna hear all about rights? He'll read 'em to ya.

Ralph Bowen, U.S. Senator:
Will you accept some advice, Mr. Keller?

Inspector Steve Keller:
Sure.

Ralph Bowen, U.S. Senator:
Let Fred Marshall rest in peace.

Inspector Steve Keller:
That's exactly the same advice I got from Marshall's assistant.

Ralph Bowen, U.S. Senator:
And with good reasons.

Inspector Steve Keller:
I'd like to know them.

Ralph Bowen, U.S. Senator:
Oh, come now. You've seen them all your life. The people love a good smear campaign. They delight in having someone's name dragged through the mud.

Inspector Steve Keller:
And that's the same public that's elected you to Washington all these years, isn't it, Senator? Just seems strange that you above all people wouldn't respect their ability to tell the difference between a lie and the truth.

Reid Bradshaw:
[Riled in response to Stone's aggressive questioning] You really like your job, don't you, Lieutenant? Gun on the hip, instant authority. Come to a place like this, collar the head man, roust him a little, give him the third degree. Pretty heady stuff, isn't it?

Detective Lt. Mike Stone:
Look, Mr. Bradshaw...

Reid Bradshaw:
No, you look! Take a look at all this. I laid everything I had on the line to build it from a bankrupt corporation to a big money company while you hid behind the city payroll. The authority I got, I earned. And I'm not about to stand here and listen to loaded questions from somebody who's pulling his clout from my taxes.

Robert Alan Hobbes:
Lieutenant, you've got a whole big city here. The switchboard down there's loaded with calls, your file cabinets with complaints. You take care of the city. You let me take care of Artis Pierce.

Detective Lt. Mike Stone:
No, I won't. I can't lay a hand on you until you break the law, commit a crime. You know it, and I know it. But the crime you're about to commit... well, that crime's the worst crime of all.

Robert Alan Hobbes:
That's right. That's absolutely right. But Artis Pierce committed it first.

Artis Pierce:
[Confronting Hobbes, who has been stalking him] Now you stay outta my tracks, or you've just ordered yourself a box, man. You had your chance. You could've put me away. But you buckled. Now butt out, or they'll pick you off of the street with a broom and dustpan.

Detective Lt. Mike Stone:
I don't want the coroner to give me that bullet. I want it from him right now, so come along, we're going to the hospital.

Jeff Williams:
I don't think so, Lieutenant. You don't have that authority. You're a policeman; I shouldn't have to tell you the law.

Inspector Steve Keller:
The law?

Jeff Williams:
Mm-hmm. I did some checking, and it seems among the other personal guarantees in this country is the guarantee that our bodies are inviolate. Not even the Supreme Court can force a man to submit to a surgical operation. That's the law, gentlemen. And I'm sure that, as officers sworn to uphold it, you won't do anything to make me break it.

Jeff Williams:
[Lecturing in his poetry class] What a man is or does in private becomes a part of his public image. Good or bad, it's on the record. And whether that's good or bad, I leave you to think about.

Detective Lt. Mike Stone:
[Stone looks at the book Keller presented him as a gift] Poems? Poetry?

Inspector Steve Keller:
It's Ezra Pound. Remember Williams talking about him at the school?

Detective Lt. Mike Stone:
Yeah, I remember. He talked to his class about him, yeah.

Inspector Steve Keller:
That's right. That's for you.

Detective Lt. Mike Stone:
[Reading a random page] Oh, now wait a minute. I can't read this.

Inspector Steve Keller:
Why not?

Detective Lt. Mike Stone:
Listen: "Raineth drop and staineth slop." Oh, come on now.

Inspector Steve Keller:
Wait a minute, what?

Detective Lt. Mike Stone:
Yeah. "Raineth drop and staineth slop. Skiddeth bus and sloppeth us." Now come on. Isn't poetry supposed to be clear and to the point?

Inspector Steve Keller:
That's right.

Detective Lt. Mike Stone:
Well, I've got something clear and to the point for you, young fella.

Inspector Steve Keller:
[Watching as Stone pulls a card from his pocket] What is this?

Detective Lt. Mike Stone:
Sit quietly. "You have a right to remain silent." Is that clear?

Inspector Steve Keller:
That's clear.

Detective Lt. Mike Stone:
"Anything you say will be used against you in a court of law." Is that to the point?

Inspector Steve Keller:
That's to the point.

Detective Lt. Mike Stone:
All right, then get going!

Detective Lt. Mike Stone:
You mean the biggest crook in San Francisco kicks his son out of the house because he's a thief? Y'know, there's gotta be a lesson in that somewhere.

Louie Pulaski:
Sure, only steal from strangers.

Bernard Rizino:
[Discussing Ronnie] I shoulda hit him when he came through the door.

Frank McGuire:
Why didn't you?

Bernard Rizino:
He's your son, Mr. McGuire.

Frank McGuire:
He's a cannibal! A cannibal! He'd eat my flesh to save himself... Tell them he's my son when he's dead. As long as he's alive, he's my enemy.

Inspector Steve Keller:
[Bringing Beverley's "trick book" to Stone] There's gotta be over 200 names in this thing.

Detective Lt. Mike Stone:
Anybody we know?

Inspector Steve Keller:
[Chuckling] I always thought you were a voyeur.

Detective Lt. Mike Stone:
I find out what that means, you can be back driving a black-and-white again.

Beverly Landau:
[to Keller] The hooker and the cop. The whole world spits on us. But they can't get along without us. You know that we work the same lousy hours, see the same lousy people, and then we get the same lousy stares if anyone has to know what we do. Sigh. Somebody's gotta do it, so here we are.

Inspector Steve Keller:
You mean the only twelve nights off I've had all year?

Detective Lt. Mike Stone:
Alright, how about tomorrow? Dodgers again? Huh? We can go out early and grab a couple of hot dogs, watch batting practice.

Inspector Steve Keller:
Mike, Mike. You ever stop to think, maybe I wanna see someone with a face a little prettier than yours once in a while?

Detective Lt. Mike Stone:
Alright. Alright, if I didn't know how much you hated baseball, I could take that personally.

Inspector Steve Keller:
[to the hysterical mother of a missing child] You have a family doctor?

Mrs. Dunham:
Why?

Inspector Steve Keller:
He could prescribe something for you to relax.

Mrs. Dunham:
I don't want a doctor - I want my boy!

Detective Lt. Mike Stone:
[Walking to the car after questioning the Rudolphs] Those kids were playin' there, all right. The way that joker made it sound, no kid would wanna miss what was going on there.

Inspector Steve Keller:
I wonder how much that Billy really knows.

Detective Lt. Mike Stone:
Well, he knows enough not to tell the old man the truth. Hey, what a way to raise kids, huh? Spook stories and spankings.

Detective Lt. Mike Stone:
Our u-turns are fringe benefits; his are illegal.

Inspector Steve Keller:
[Stunned upon entering the junk-stuffed Edgerton home] I don't believe it. I really don't believe it. Rudolph said the old man collected trash. Looks like he imported the whole city dump.

Detective Lt. Mike Stone:
I don't know, buddy-boy. There is junk... and there is junk.

Inspector Steve Keller:
[Chuckling] Yeah, but this is bananas time. I mean, this old guy is totally out of his tree.

Detective Lt. Mike Stone:
Yeah, my guess is when his brother wouldn't go out into the world, Harlan brought the world in to him.

Detective Lt. Mike Stone:
[Entering a seedy bar] Two coffees, Tim!

Tim Murphy:
Coffee, huh? Gotta be A.A. or Mike Stone.

Tim Murphy:
I'm sorry, Nick. I'm sorry.

Nick Carl:
Tim Murphy sorry? Yeah, I guess maybe you are sorry. We're all sorry. You, me, Johnny. We were born sorry. And I guess we'll die the same way.

Nick Carl:
You know why I came back, Johnny? Because you asked. I didn't even think about it. Otherwise I wouldn't have come back. I don't like remembering what I used to be. All those years, and all that time, I remembered I have one friend. One guy I figured I owed. No questions. Do it, whatever it was. So I came back for one more job.

Rex Riley:
[Discussing the murdered Stephanie Brown] Maybe she was rotten to the core. Who cared?

Inspector Steve Keller:
Well, what was rotten about her?

Rex Riley:
She was a taker. A real taker.

Detective Lt. Mike Stone:
What's a taker?

Rex Riley:
Oh, you know, somebody who leads you on and tries to get something out of you. Money, a car, anything. That's it. They just take it and it's "Goodbye, Charlie."

Nurse Supervisor:
[Discussing the murdered Glenda Elliott with her former supervisor] Glenda Elliott? Let me put it this way, Mr. Keller. The first thing a girl like that does when she hits the hall is get a roster of the doctors. And she goes down it one by one in alphabetical order. When she comes to the interns, she moves on.

Inspector Steve Keller:
Well, what's wrong with interns?

Nurse Supervisor:
They're poor, Mr. Keller. They are the church mice of medicine. Is that what you wanted to know?

Inspector Steve Keller:
Yes, ma'am.

Tim Duran:
[Interrogating the sniper] Okay, so I shot her. What does that have to do with you? She didn't lie to you. She lied to me.

Inspector Steve Keller:
So you killed her?

Tim Duran:
If I had enough ammo, I would've stayed up here forever. Forever!

Detective Lt. Mike Stone:
Forever's just about where you're headed for, son.

Tim Duran:
No way, baby, no way. Two years in a head farm, eating public chow, and I'm back in circulation. You watch.

Detective Lt. Mike Stone:
I can understand why he'd want to quit sales, though. Driving all over town. Knocking on doors. Lousy hours. Taking lip from people who don't wanna be bothered.

Inspector Steve Keller:
Sounds kind of familiar.

Detective Lt. Mike Stone:
I thought you'd see it.

Detective Lt. Mike Stone:
[Examining a logo on a piece of evidence] Whaddaya call it?

Inspector Steve Keller:
It's a unicorn.

Detective Lt. Mike Stone:
Unicorn, that's it. What do you know about unicorns, buddy-boy?

Inspector Steve Keller:
Unicorn. Singular. Not more than one. Used a lot in ancient myths. There's only one way to catch it.

Detective Lt. Mike Stone:
How's that?

Inspector Steve Keller:
Well, it lays its head in the lap of a virgin.

Detective Lt. Mike Stone:
Well, now, you would know that. Information like that's gonna get you right to the top, buddy-boy!

Abel Hoffman:
Two cops were shot with this gun.

Father Joe Skarn:

Abel Hoffman:
Same as. I was there.

Detective Lt. Mike Stone:

Sergeant Earl Eddie Mack, California Dept. of Corrections:

It's unwritten, Susan, but it's there just the same. They don't turn on me, I don't turn on them. It's how we live together. Well, they broke it. After all I did for 'em.

I have a job to do, Inspector. Just like you, only mine's a little different. You arrest them, testify against them in court, and then send them to me for the next five-to-ten years. And I have to live with them.

Inspector Dan Robbins:
But you don't have to brutalize them.

Sergeant Earl Eddie Mack, California Dept. of Corrections:
I don't brutalize anyone. All I do is keep them there. The ugly things that happen inside are the things they do to each other, which are exactly the things they'd be doing to innocent people if they were out on the streets. Now if you object to the things that happen to men in prison, stop sending them.

Inspector Steve Keller:
[In response to Stone implying that because of work he'll cancel his planned Hawaiian vacation] You know you really are a character. You don't trust anybody with your city, do ya?

Detective Lt. Mike Stone:
My city? What are you talkin' about, "my city"?

Inspector Steve Keller:
You know what I'm talking about; it's the truth. You don't take ten minutes for lunch, how are you gonna go take ten days sittin' under a tree?

Detective Lt. Mike Stone:
I'll tell you what I'm gonna take - I'm gonna take you apart in just ten seconds!

Inspector Steve Keller:
All right, Lieutenant, that's it. [Pulls a card from his billfold and reads from it] You have the right to remain silent...

Detective Lt. Mike Stone:
Oh, c'mon! OUT!

Record Clerk:
[Discussing McFee's transfer from Chino to San Quentin] They sent him to us to straighten him out. How do you unkink a corkscrew?

Detective Lt. Mike Stone:
Are you OK?

Inspector Steve Keller:
[Breathing heavily] Like a cold shower after a hard workout.

Inspector Steve Keller:
[Mike laughs] What are you laughing about?

Detective Lt. Mike Stone:
[Mike points and laughs at Steve] You.

Inspector Steve Keller:
What? [Mike continues to laugh] What?

Detective Lt. Mike Stone:
What time you got?

Inspector Steve Keller:
[Steve checks his watch] What are you worried about the time- Oh man! [Steve slaps a barrel, while Mike laughs and claps] What are you laughing about? You blew another hundred dollar deposit to Hawaii!

Detective Lt. Mike Stone:
Oh! Maybe next year.

Inspector Steve Keller:
Yeah, yeah.

Detective Lt. Mike Stone:
Don't forget your coat.

Inspector Steve Keller:
Sure.

Detective Lt. Mike Stone:
Pick up your shoes.

Inspector Steve Keller:
I got my shoes!

Amory Gilliam:
