Janitor's wife:
What?

Ms. Hallamaa:
At the stairs! I smell the odor of gas at the stairs.

Janitor:
Gas! No, it is not the odor of gas! [to his wife] Or did you smell it?

Janitor's wife:
No, it is just the drainpipes that are broken.

Ms. Hallamaa:
No, I'm sure that it is the odor of gas.

Janitor:
That old woman, that old woman upstairs. She doesn't have the drainpipes repaired, because she is so stingy.

Ms. Hallamaa:
What ever you say, this is the smell of gas!
