Balinese society is famed as having an enormously rich base of culturally marked symbols, ritual events and activities, artistic productions, and folklore and mythology. How do these intricate cultural forms intersect with the symptoms and syndromes in people who have developed neuropsychiatric disorders? Can aspects of culture buffer or alleviate some of the more negative long-term psychosocial effects of these complex illnesses?
