She lost her balance, and she fell to the ground. She broke her arm, but it was her head that was hurt the most. The doctors said that she would never be right again, and that from then on, she would always be like a six-year-old. Mama never forgave herself for leaving that ladder out, and she never forgave me for climbing it up the tree.

Why didn't anyone tell me?

Honey, your granny didn't like to talk about it ever, and I didn't have much memory of it myself.

How'd you find out?

Dorie Kay:
When I was about your age, I was frustrated because I had to take Corrina with me everywhere I went. It's a terrible thing to admit, but I was embarrassed by my sister. So one day when I was going on about how unfair it all was, Mama sat me down and told me the whole story, and that was the only time she ever mentioned it. I cannot tell you how much guilt I felt.
