The dream of joining the Atlantic & Pacific Oceans with a canal first came to light in the 16th Century. Spanish explorer Vasco Nunez de Balboa had just hacked his way through Panama's treacherous Darien jungle and gazed upon the Pacific Ocean. Suddenly, a new vision of the world emerged. A narrow strip of land, the Isthmus of Panama, was the only barrier between the two great oceans. Panama's geography would be its destiny.
