As costume dramas go, this is a passionate and feisty one, keyed by the ever-luminous Vanessa Redgrave in the title role and the sharp-edged Glenda Jackson as her jealous cousin, Queen Elizabeth I (who knew a thing or two about palace intrigue). Mar… more »

This summary( above) of "Anne of the Thousand Days" is incorrect . The film is about Anne Boleyn and Henry VIII. The DVD, includes both Vanessa Redgrave in "Mary , Queen of Scots"; which is the summary of the above film and "Anne of The Thousand Days".

Henry VIII is smitten with Anne , who has just returned from the French court and wants to bed her, as he has done previously with her sister, with whom he has a child. The problem is, Anne is not her sister and she won't give in to Henry, until he promises her to divorce Katherine , his current queen and make Anne , Queen of England.

In this fiery drama both Burton and Bujold are equally wonderful? History comes alive in this period drama , full of intrigue, sex and murder. Henry separates England from the Catholic Church and becomes Head of the Church of England and an absolute monarch. England becomes Protestant and Henry marries Anne. Anne gives him a daughter:
Elizabeth.

Henry wants to have a son as his heir but he can't. He quickly moves on to another girl and wants Anne out of the way. Anne is falsley accused of treason in court and condemned to die. Henry asks one last time that Anne gives up her rights of being England's queen, which will anull her marriage and make Elizabeth a bastard. Anne refuses and pays the price for it:
she is beheaded by a French swordsman. Henry goes on to pursue his next conquest. Elizabeth is left alone, as she hears the cannon shots, announcing her mother's death, she walks away in the gardens of the palace.

This is one of the most memorable British movies about the period. a real cinematic gem.
