The huge factory that can be seen from our town, the Medical Mechanica Plant, all the adults got excited when it came here, like it was really a big thing. The white steam that billows out every day at the same time, it looked to me like smoke that signified some kind of omen. Smoke that spreads out and covers everything.

Haruko:
Oh I killed him, I finally find the S.O.B. and I killed him. I didn't mean to it was an accident, kind of. Ah lets face it I definitely totally killed him, just like that Bang! No more like bong, kablam or kunga ka-splat! yea yea yea . . .

Naota:
What did you do to me?

Haruko:
CPR. What do you think I did?

Naota:
That's not what I meant.

Mamimi:
Did she put her tongue inside?

Haruko:

[Mamimi is clutching a bag of old bread]

[Ninamori watches Canti eat curry]

Kamon Nandaba:

[Canti gets up]

Kamon Nandaba:

Eri Ninamori:

Naota:

Eri Ninamori:

Naota:

Amarao:
What about the eyebrows?

Naota:
Nothing.

Haruko:
It has to be you Ta-kun, that's how life is, Sometimes you're the cat, sometimes the mouse.

Mamimi:
[gasps] Oooooooooooh! FOLLOW THE TRAVELING THUNDER! AND THE GREAT RUMBLE! WELCOME! LORD OF FEAR! HAAAAAIL! [laughs] You see it was worth invoking his presence even after the prediction failed.

Amarao:

Naota:
By the time I realized it, I had already swung the bat. My palms still sting. I wonder if Haruko feels like this all the time.

[Haruko laughs gleefully]

Naota:
Ever since that day smoke has continued to pour out of the medical mechanica factory. The town is completely covered in white mist, you can't see the sky or the stars. It's almost like, outside of this town nothing else exists anymore, a town where you can't go beyond the edge. The gigantic hand says "Stay where you are. You have no choice." It's like the right hand of a judge or a prison warden about to give the signal for an execution.

Naota:
When you're in a town like this all covered with smoke, you forget that there's a world outside. Nothing amazing happens here. And you get used to that, used to a world where everything is ordinary. Every day we spend here is like a whole lifetime of dying slowly. But now Haruko is here. That's how I know there really is a world outside.

[Amarao and Kitsurubami are examining a hand-shaped structure on a bank of televisions]

Kitsurubami:
It's... a hand, isn't it?

Amarao:
It's a hand.

Amarao:
[to Haruko] This is insane! You're doing exactly what Medical Mechanica wants! They're flattening planets all over the galaxy... smoothing out the wrinkles so you can't think! Even the Pirate King has been captured! They're using him to lure you in! It's over! IT'S ALL OVER!

Haruko:
I said I don't CARE about any of that. I just want Atomsk, that's all. I don't care what happens to this planet. They'll have to learn to 'think smooth', I guess!

Amarao:
[Naota has just emerged from Canti's head, glowing bright red] The kid? Did he do it? HE GOT THE POWERS OF THE PIRATE KING! ATOMSK!

Haruko:
[suddenly enraged, gritting her teeth] Ta-kun, you can't DO THAT! That power's MINE!

Naota:
[Naota 'lets go' of his powers as the Pirate King just in time not to hurt Haruko, to Haruko] I love you.

Haruko:
I lost him again because of you, Ta-kun, we couldn't pull it off. You wanna come along? [pauses] Know what? Forget it. 'Cause you're still a kid, Ta-kun. Save it for next time.

Mamimi Samejima:
Ta-kun!

Haruko Haruhara:
Native girl must stop! Taro-kun just hit his head so you can't move him yet understand?

Mamimi:
But he isn't Taro-kun.

Haruko:
He's dead! This young boy is completely dead, just as Taro would be.

[Naota in a hospital checking his bump]

Haruko [as nurse]:

Naota:

Haruko:

[crashing sounds]

Haruko:

[crashing stops and Naota sneaks out of the hospital]

Naota:
When you're on a bike, the ocean's a lot closer than you think. The autumn salt wind went right through to the back of my nose. And maybe it's because, like Haruko said, my head was empty.

Haruko:

Naota:

Eri:

Haruko:

What are they? (she touches them)

Commander Amarao:

[a giant satellite bomb is headed towards the city]

[Haruko is trying to pull an object out of Naota's head]

Haruko:

[protecting Kitsurubami from shooting at Canti] CYBORG, MY BUTT!

[Mamimi is scared and calling for Naota's brother, over and over]

[Canti comes down out of the sky]

Naota:
Now listen, my name is Naota. Don't EVER call me Ta-kun again!

Mamimi:
Finally, I think I can forgive all of them after this

Amarao:

Amarao:

Amarao:

Naota:
Nothing amazing happens here. Everything is ordinary. We crossed the bridge as usual, and before we knew it the seasons had changed. Mamimi left town. She said she wanted to be a photographer. I don't know what happened to her after that.

Naota:
