Lena:
Are you offering to help me kill Supergirl?

Hope:
Yes. Would you like me to facilitate?

Lena:
I appreciate the offer, Hope. You grow more intelligent and capable by the day. And your assistance comes without ambition, drama, or ego.

Hope:
That's why you built me.

Lena:
Precisely. Because I trust in technology, not people. People are governed by feelings; anger hurt, sadness. And I'm guilty of that, too. That's why I engage in these simulations, to excise these emotions. I'm not a villain. I don't wanna kill Supergirl; I just want her to experience the same hurt she inflicted on me. And soon enough, she will.

Nia:

Brainy:

Nia:

Brainy:
I'm as serious as the pursed lips of Miranda Priestly.

Nia:
[seeing Alex and Kara] Okay, good, you guys can help me prove a point. Who is the greatest movie villain of all time?

Kara:

Alex:

Nia:
Impressively unhelpful. Well, I guess you'll just have to accept that I'm right.

Brainy:
Hmm. This Earth custom that the girlfriend is always right is illogical and-and frustrating, but I can assimilate.

Andrea Rojas:
When Ms. Danvers won the Pulitzer, readership tanked. It gives a certain kind of impression that the paper is pedantic; it's heavy, it's dull, like homework.

Kara:
That's insane.

Andrea:
No, Kara, what's insane is branding a company in a way that causes people to click away from the site.

Kara:
The news is not about clicks.

Andrea:
Everything is about clicks. From Fortune 500 companies selling their wares to a new mom posting her child's birthday, today the measure of worth is on a click. To survive, CatCo needs to pivot. Attention spans have plummeted along with revenues. Readers want watercooler news that's just fun to read and just as easy to digest.

James:
That, um... I'm pretty sure I can speak for everybody in the room when I say that if that is the kind of content that you wanna create here, we will walk. This is not what we signed up for.

Kelly:
This is nice, you in my office.

James:
Well, I'm not so sure if I actually have an office anymore.

Kelly:
Yeah, I, uh, ran into Kara in the elevator, and I had to tell her that I couldn't join her crusade against my new boss on my... second day?

James:
Yeah.

Kelly:
I'll support whatever you guys decide to do. Just mostly in the abstract.

James:
I'm just really proud of the company that we built over the last few years. It's a strong, serious, hard-hitting news organization that actually affects people's lives. Whatever this vision Andrea has for CatCo, I don't recognize it. And I don't think I can play that game.

Kelly:
Then don't.

James:
What do you mean?

Kelly:
CatCo and journalism isn't all that you are. You started helping people long before dad put that camera in your hand. And, look, I know that you think that you have to muscle your way through everything. But, for once, just take a step back and ask... what does James Olsen want?

Kara:
You can't just take over a storied news outlet and turn it into a... a pandering clickbait tabloid.

Andrea:
Actually, I can.

Kara:
And here's where you threaten me if I quit, you'll block me from the whole profession.

Andrea:
Correct.

Kara:
Mm-hmm.

Andrea:
And I'm not gonna fire you.

Kara:
Well, I'm not leaving journalism, so if I stay here, you should get used to the fact that I will be reporting what I want and writing it the way I want to. I will try to be shorter, because I am flexible. But I will fight you every time on every story to make sure it is told the way it deserves to be told. I will not tolerate being re-written by him, and I will not allow my voice to be silenced.

Andrea:
I never had any intention of silencing you, Kara. I'm glad we worked that out.

Hope:
Good morning, Ms. Luthor.

Lena:
Is it morning? I lost track of time. I had an epiphany last night. There's something in these lenses of the Obsidian technology that's going to allow me to change the course of humanity.

Hope:
That is an exciting agenda. What is your scientific hypothesis?

Lena:
Hope, could you hurt someone?

Hope:
I am incapable of causing pain. It is against my prime directive.

Lena:
Exactly. Because you were built in the very image of perfection. You have no selfish inclinations. Your base code is morality, empathy, and logic. Humans and aliens, however, are flawed. They are driven by their emotions. They lie, cheat, and hurt each other to protect themselves. But it's not their fault, it's just how they're programmed. I am going to make them better with Project Non Nocere.

Hope:

Kara:
Whoa! You have a bento box fort.

Nia:
Yup. Yeah, I do.

Kara:
Can I have some?

Nia:
Yes.

Kara:
I'm starving.

Nia:
Yes, please, take them all. I'm still stuffed from breakfast.

Kara:
Well, let me guess, is this Brainy?

Nia:
This morning, he brought me my favorite breakfast, and it was perfect, but I don't know. Isn't this... a little excessive?

Kara:
Um, maybe giving food is Brainy's language of love, I don't know.

Nia:
Well, I think I just need to tell him in plain English that this is 35 boxes of sushi too much love.

Kara:

Alex:

J'onn:
Yes. He said he was my brother. At first, I didn't believe him, but now I know it must be true.

James:
How do you know?

J'onn:
This is specifically a Martian form of agony. In the early days of Mars, there were two brothers, Phobos and Deimos. Their rivaly and bloodshed was the reason for the split of the Green and White Martians. To prevent this ever happening again, a curse was placed on the Green Martians. We call it Fa'ra'too'rik. It is the punishment for brother attacking brother.

William Dey:
You're here late. Working on a new extracurricular story?

Kara:
No. Actually, I'm just here to do my job.

Dey:
That's a nice change.

Kara:
You know what? I see you. You're a saboteur. You bring other people down to make you look better. And maybe that's how you've made it this far, but that's a rotten way of making it to the top. So you can try to get me in trouble and steal my stories, but while you're busy plotting and undermining me, I'm gonna be doing my job, with heart and integrity, and I'm gonna be doing it well.

Alex:
You know, I, um... I-I realized that my spiral this morning about the blueberries wasn't... wasn't really about the blueberries.

Kelly:
What do you mean?

Alex:
We haven't been together for very long, so, you know, it just made me realize how much we still don't know about each other. And, you know, I really frickin' like you, like, a lot. And so... that scared me.

Kelly:
Alex, you're safe with me.

Alex:
I know that now. Earlier when I... when I touched her hand, I knew that wasn't you. Because you can't fake how that feels. Just like you can't fake being who you are. So, on that rooftop, when you made that very selfless choice, I knew exactly in that moment which one of you was my Kelly. And I might not know every little detail about you yet, but I know you.

Andrea:
What's next on the docket? Any celebrity divorces? Disgraced influencers? Show me the clicks.

Franklin:
I've got this week's medical examiner's report, and I thought we could run a story on recent deaths.

Andrea:
People love to read about death. It reminds them that they're alive, and it gives them the pleasure of schadenfreude. I like it.

Franklin:
[shows pictures on screen] 20-year-old Uber driver, hit by a car.

Andrea:
If the person is boring, then cause of death is boring. Wow me! Show me some sparkly death.

Lena:
You brought me coffee éclairs from Cafe Rue Serret on the Champs-Élysées?

Kara:
I know they're your favorite.

Lena:
And the cappuccinos, did you really go to Pavé in Milan?

Kara:
It didn't take me that long.

Lena:
You know, I have really been missing out on the perks of having Supergirl as a best friend.

Kara:
Well, we have a lot of lost time to make up for.

Lena:
Yeah, but you know you don't have to go to Paris to pick up lunch, Kara. That's not what's important to me. But, these scones from Dublin, oh my God, you can fly these in every day.

Kara:
I kind of... spontaneously agreed to... do a favor for Lena.

Alex:
Okay, so what's wrong with that?

Kara:
Nothing, it just entails... breaking into a secure army facility and stealing Lex Luthor's journals.

Alex:
What? Kara, are you out of your mind?

Kara:
I just blurted it out! I wasn't thinking. But, you should've seen how much pain she was in, and she's so traumatized by Lex's death, and the journals are the only way she can find closure.

Alex:
No, you're going to call her right now and you're going to tell her you made a mistake. You're not doing this.

Kara:
No, I can't.

Alex:
No, what you can't do is break the law and steal federal property.

Kara:
Technically, I break the law all the time. I just broke into a supermax prison two months ago.

Alex:
Okay, that is totally different. That's to serve justice, right? Okay. What you're talking about here is crossing that line for a friend.

[J'onn and Nia watch a memory of J'onn]

J'onn:
Father, you did the best you could for Mal. It's not your fault.

M'yrnn:
He was my boy, my child. He could not control his illness. The test was mine and I failed. I do not deserve to live. And how can I continue to counsel our people, when I myself am nothing?

J'onn:
Father, our people need you. I need you.

M'yrnn:
Then I have failed everyone.

J'onn:
H'ronmeer, forgive me. [wipes his and M'yrnn's minds from the memory of Malefic]

Nia:
You said I had to be honest, even if it hurt your feelings, so here's the truth. It's just too much. Okay, from now on, no more food, no more poems, no more anything. I know that you mean well, I know where you are coming from and it's sweet, it's all so sweet. I just, it's too much.

Brainy:
You asked me to be myself, to be completely myself with you. But, now you tell me you don't want that. I can only operate at one hundred percent. It's just how I'm built. Which is entirely my problem and not yours.

Alex:
We can't afford any more missteps. I'm having the Verdex Blaster brought up from the armory.

Supergirl:
What?

J'onn:
Alex. That Verdex Blaster was designed by Hank Henshaw to kill Green Martians, specifically me. It's a last resort.

Alex:
Hank Henshaw was wrong about you, but Malefic is exactly the kind of Martian that this blaster was designed for.

Supergirl:
Hang on, wait, wait, wait. Let's not rush into this. Because if we had had the Verdex Blaster, Malefic could've incepted one of us to use it on J'onn. Let's at least have Brainy try to fix it first.

Alex:
Okay. Okay.

Brainy:
Excellent. I shall adjust the Phantom Zone projector's wavelengths so Malefic cannot phase through it while simultaneously recalibrating the psychic inhibitor frequencies, all to distract myself from my broken heart.

Lena:
Look, Brainy, I know you haven't asked for help, but you're getting it anyway.

Brainy:
No. I need my mind consumed with this problem so I don't think of Nia.

Lena:
What happened to your little boxes?

Brainy:
Little boxes prevented me from having a real relationship. Unfortunately, my unboxed self does not make a particularly good boyfriend. So I have been analyzing myself for days, searching for a way to modulate myself for the woman I love.

Lena:
Well, I'm not gonna give you relationship advice. But as a scientist, you seem to be stuck in an infinite loop, and unless you can escape, you're headed for a crash.

Brainy:
That would be cataclysmic.

Lena:
So change a variable. What's the one thing you haven't tried yet? Asking for help?

Brainy:
Will you he... [getting tongue-tied, he clears his throat and coughs] Will you help... me?

Lena:
Yes. And I think a small dose of that would go a long way with Nia.

James:
So, how long you been living in my aunt's house?

Simon Kirby:
Couple months. Sometimes we crash with friends, sometimes we just camp out in the woods.

James:
Where are your parents?

Simon:
Haven't seen my dad since I was... five? My mom got busted last winter stealing a space heater from the hardware store. The judge wouldn't even give her a chance to explain. They gave her ten years for stealing a 30-buck heater.

James:
Since when does petty theft get you that kind of time?

Simon:
It's a racket. The cops, judges, lawyers, everyone's in on it. They keep the prison full, the prison keeps their pockets lined.

James:
How's nobody stood up against them? Called these guys out?

Simon:
Like who? Nobody's gonna speak up and risk themselves. Anyways, you can't beat the system, so what's the point?

James:
There is a point, Simon. You have to stand up and fight against injustice.

Simon:
Everyone's just out for their own skin. It's the way it is.

James:
Not on my watch.

James:
So, I met this local kid who says his mom is serving ten years for petty theft? So I did some digging, and that prison in your backyard, it seems to have a lot of people serving long sentences for small crimes.

Nelson Stewart:
Yeah, people have bad luck, I guess.

James:
Bad luck? It's prison corruption, wouldn't you say?

Nelson:
It's, um... it's complicated. Look, I wish I could help you, but...

James:
You can help me, Nelson. That's why I'm here. Journalism's about fighting for the little guy, you taught me that. It's your job to point out corruption, so what the hell's going on here?

Nelson:
Things have, uh, changed for some people. Idealism doesn't feed a family. And this whole power of the press thing, it might work if you've got the backing of a media conglomerate and a certain girl with a cape. But around here, it doesn't mean anything.

James:
Standing up for what's right always means something. Nelson. That prison is stomping on the neck of this entire town.

Nelson:
It's also the only thing that's keeping this town alive. Look, I'd love to see these bastards get what they deserve. But if I call them out, my advertisers, they pull their money, not only am I out of a job but so are the 30 other people I employ. Go back to National City. I like to think of you there. You know, I'm just glad somebody made it out of this town. And I'm glad it was you.

James:
You guys all know that I've been doing a lot of soul searching since I left CatCo. Trying to figure out what's next. I knew I wanted to give back, and I wanted to help people. But I was driving myself crazy trying to figure out where to put those efforts. And then my extremely wise sister gave me some damn good advice. She said "stop trying so hard to figure things out, and just be still and listen." And finally I heard it. Only it wasn't a voice from inside of me, it was this kid's voice, this-this kid that we met in Calvintown. Sadly, it's become this cesspool for crime and corruption. And he told me that-that... no one there's willing to help. There's nobody willing to stand up and do the right thing. There-there's nobody willing to put their neck on the line. And just like that, that's what I knew I had to do. Look, I've been fighting the good fight from a fancy corner office for years. And in the streets of National City as Guardian. But I started off as a guy with a camera. A camera our dad gave me. Among the people. And that is where I need to be. For now, I'm going back to Calvintown. I'm going home. And I am gonna show that town that there is somebody who is willing to fight for them. I'm gonna buy the Calvintown Gazette.

Kara:
Wow.

James:
Look, Andrea Rojas may be able to stop me from writing for a newspaper, but she can't stop me from publishing one.

Kara:
That's amazing. And what are we gonna do without you?

James:
One of the main reasons I moved to National City was because Clark wanted me to keep an eye on you. But you're the one that kept an eye on me. You never needed me. Not then, and certainly not now.

Lena:
It is my mission to stop people from hurting each other. I will not kill.

Malefic:
Perhaps. But, you've gone to extreme measures to bring me here. And now, you are at the precipice. Studying my mind is the key. I know of desperation, human. I know the depths you feel.

Brainy:
That is the phrase. I've kept it top secret all day. You're welcome.

Alex:
Seriously?

Brainy:
It's from the oeuvre of Mr. Keanu Reeves.

Kara:
Pop quiz hot shot?

Kara:
I never would have thought Andrea was a criminal and I was convinced William was evil. How could I have been so wrong about both of them? And now with Obsidian tech everywhere, I mean, everyone's just in these make believe worlds and it's hard to know what's real anymore. I just want some certainty.

J'onn:
You know, my biggest takeaway from what happened with Malefic is when the world is uncertain, there's one thing that's rock solid. It's the people who love you.

Margot:
You've really outdone yourself with those contact lenses. I hear they are as omnipresent as one of our plagues or floods.

Andrea:
That was you yesterday?

Margot:
Leviathan is everywhere. And now a problem has come up. We need you to fix it. It's Rip Roar.

Lena:
You see this? This is why I need to be in National City. There are people doing good there, who are trying to help. If I stay in Metropolis, I will always be the sister of the egomaniacal lunatic. But, if I go to National City, I can be the Luthor that shares her home with a Kryptonian, that helps her put the world back together instead of tearing it apart.

Lena:
I never needed them, any of them. That doesn't mean they can't be useful.

Lena:
What would Rose Dawson do?

Andrea:
You jump, I jump, right?

Andrea:
Every time I look at you, I'm reminded of all the horrible things I've done.

Lena:
Funny, every time I look at you all I remember is pain.

Kara:
I know you feel you've gone too far to ever be Russell again, but you're wrong. It is never too late to make things right, or, at least, better.

Gamemnae:
You and I both share the same goal, of wanting to put a stop to people who disrespect this planet. I'm here to offer my help.

Rama Khan:

Gamemnae:

Lena:
It was an earthquake. It was the eighth-largest natural disaster in modern history.

Brainy:
Precisely. It's good to have you back, Lena. A myth was born that this man was the cause. Now, of course, scientists insisted that the natural disasters were natural, but in an ironic twist of history, they were wrong, and the fearmongers were right. Several reliable sources place this man at the scene of the crime throughout history. Pompeii, the Yellow River flood of 1887, the Bhola cyclone, even as far back as Noah's flood, this Earth-Bender has been spotted.

Alex:
Excuse me, did you say "Earth-Bender"?

Brainy:
How else would you describe him? He... he literally manipulates the earth.

Supergirl:
But wait. Pompeii, Noah's flood? I mean, what is he, thousands of years old?

Brainy:
Correct. Which means he's an alien with powers of longevity this civilization has never conceived of.

Alex:
No wonder people thought he was a myth.

Lena:
With all this destruction, his existence is still shrouded in mystery. He's managed to convince the world he doesn't exist.

Lena:
When I came to this city, I promised myself that I would never trust anyone again, and... then I met you. And you chipped away at my armor with your warmth and your earnestness, and you convinced me to trust in people and friendship again, and against my better judgment, I did, all the while telling you about my Achilles heel, betrayal. I confided in you that everyone in my past had betrayed me. About how much it hurt to have someone you love lie to you and betray you. I spelled it out to you over and over again, essentially begging you not to violate my trust, begging you not to prove that, once again, that I was a fool. You reassured me ad nauseum that you would never lie to me, that you'd never hurt me. And all the while, there wasn't a single honest moment in our friendship.

Supergirl:
Lena, you didn't kill Lex. I... that was me. I... I watched him... I saw him fall.

Lena:
You saw him fall, but did you see him land? Did you see him die? I did, and let me tell you, it wasn't pretty.

Supergirl:
That's impossible.

Lena:
Anything's possible when you're a Luthor. Lex used his transmatter portal watch. I knew exactly where he'd go. The cabin we loved when we were children, so I was there waiting for him. I had the gun ready, loaded. I could feel the weight of it in my hands. Every fiber in my being rebelled, but I... I didn't want to do it, but I knew I had to because if Lex lived, the world wouldn't be safe, my friends wouldn't be safe. So I forced myself to pull the trigger. I shot my own brother in the chest. His final words to me were that I was a fool, that my best friend, that every friend I had was lying to me. With his dying breath, he told me that you were Supergirl.

Supergirl:
Are you gonna try to kill me?

Lena:
No. Supergirl, I'm not gonna kill you. I'm not a villain. You shouldn't have treated me like one.

Lena:
Of course, you assumed the worst. I'm not the bad guy.

Kara:
I know. You spent years trying to be open and trusting, even when everyone expected you to be like your family. Even when everyone in your life let you down. [crying] Even when I was weak and lied to you, knowing that all you ever asked for was the truth, you were always better. Lex took advantage of my weakness and he used it to manipulate you. He wanted my mistakes to change you. He wanted you to become him. But you are nothing like him. Nothing. Don't let my mistakes turn you into something you're not.

Lena:
I am good. And I always was. Lex didn't change me, and you didn't change me, either. You just exposed me to the ugliness of humanity. You did me a favor, Kara. I learned what kind of deceitful person you are, and that's what inspired me to do this.

Kara:
Lena...

Lena:
Your words mean nothing to me anymore. Spare us both the drama. Leave me alone.

Hope:
Supergirl caused you a great deal of pain. I can see it in your eyes.

Lena:
After my family and after Andrea, I knew better than to trust in friendship anymore.

Hope:
All of the anguish that you're going through, it doesn't seem worth it.

Lena:
It inspired Non Nocere. It inspired you. Who needs friends when you can save the world?

Alex:
Your choice to conceal your identity, it wasn't born out of a place of maliciousness. It was born out of love and compassion. You were just trying to protect your family. You were trying to protect Lena from people who could use that information to hurt us. And, look, I love Lena, too. I am deeply upset by what is going on. This is... this isn't just two friends that are in a fight. This is someone who has turned a corner.

Kara:
No, but this is not her. This is not our Lena.

Alex:
Well, who is our Lena? I mean... she knew that Lex was out of prison, and she said nothing. She kept Sam Arias locked in-in a subbasement at L-Corp, knowing that she was Reign, and she said nothing. She knows how to make kryptonite, and she kept that hidden from us. Lena is living her own double life.

Kara:
You are making her sound like a Luthor.

Alex:
Maybe that's because she is one. We can't put our faith in some distant hope that she's gonna do the right thing, and... when every single action that she has taken up until now points to the contrary. Okay, we have to stop her, Kara. The safety of the world depends on that.

Kara:
No, she is not Lex. I will not treat her like a villain.

Alex:
I know you won't. That's why I have to.

Rama Khan:
Don't you see? People never change.

Kara:
No, Rama Khan. You're wrong. People can change. That is what is so beautiful about this world.

Monitor:
Well done, J'onn J'onzz. You passed the test.

J'onn:
Test? You released my brother from the Phantom Zone? You brought my brother here?

Monitor:
When I saw you fight in Elseworlds, I could see that you were a great warrior, but one plauged by his past, and that made you vulnerable. You believed it was because you had left Mars, but it was something far far greater, J'onn. Your brother. But now that you have faced those demons, you've come to learn your vulnerabilities are your strengths. And now you are ready.

J'onn:
Ready for what?

Monitor:
A crisis.

Lena:
You're dead.

Lex:
So, you remember everything?

Lena:
Of course I remember everything! I killed you!

Lex:
Yes, that's right, you killed me. But that is in the past. Because I'm back now, and I forgive you.

Lena:
What are you talking about? What is happening?

Lex:
Well, it was, uh... sort of a Crisis.

Lena:
It was an... antimatter wave.

Lex:
Ah, yes.

Lena:
Alex and I worked together.

Lex:
Mmm-hmm.

Lena:
We built a portal... The wave still came.

Lex:
Yes, and billions were lost and the multi-verse collapsed, and it was all every interesting. What matters now is that a very powerful person brought me back to life to help. But I refused to do so, unless he promised that you would make through okay, and you have, with your noggin intact.

Lena:
You gambled the fate of the entire multi-verse to get your own way?

Lex:
It gets better. In this new world, we work side by side as Luthor Corp and the DEO to make the world a better place.

Lena:
So I'm in hell.

Lex:
No, no, you're in a new reality. To the outside world, we're billionaire philanthropists. It's the perfect cover.

Lena:
I want nothing to do with you.

Kara:
Duh! Gag me with a spoon. I don't care what world we're on, I can't ever see a version of myself agreeing to do that commercial.

Alex:
Well, on this planet, you and Lex were excellent collaborators.

Kara:
No, stop! This is literally my nightmare.

Alex:
Okay, well, how do you think I feel? I've been totally in the dark. Thank god J'onn gave me my memories back.

Kara:
Yeah, I know. I wish he could do it for everyone.

Alex:
Well, according to him, restoring the world's collective memories would reconfigure relationships on such a massive scale that everyone's minds would literally be blown.

Kara:
Ugh, gross.

Kara:
I can't believe even William is drinking the Lex Kool-Aid.

Alex:
Well, you gotta give him a little break, okay? The only people that know the truth are the ones whose memories have been restored. So it's Brainy, Nia, Kelly...

Kara:
All the heroes who helped at the Crisis, including you know who, which just makes my blood boil.

Alex:
Well, the Luthors are a breed of their own.

Kara:
Yeah. Speaking of which, I have to talk to Lena.

Alex:
Look, on this Earth, Lena and Supergirl are partners. And as far as I'm concerned, she's not trying to mind-control the planet. Plus, she doesn't hate you, so... so maybe Lena not having her memories is a good thing.

Kara:
No, no. As much... as I would love to have a clean slate with Lena, I owe it to her to tell the truth. I made that mistake once; I'm not gonna do it again.

Kara:

Lena:
Here I am.

Kara:
