Congratulations. I hear you're still a Pan Am pilot.

Dean Lowrey:
Yeah... with a six-month suspension.

Colette Valois:
It's still better than being fired.

Dean Lowrey:
Hmmm. Sorry about you and the prince.

Colette Valois:
Don't be.

Dean Lowrey:
I'm not.

Colette Valois:
[shows Dean her family photo] That's my family. That's me standing in front of my father.

Dean Lowrey:
Who's the... who's the boy?

Colette Valois:
That's my brother. Tomorrow I start looking for him.

Dean Lowrey:
Let me help you.

Colette Valois:
Dean!

Dean Lowrey:
Oh, come on. Hey, it just so happens that I have six months off of work. Come on, please.

[Colette smiles]

Maggie Ryan:

Laura Cameron:

Colette Valois:

Kate Cameron:

Ted Vanderway:
That ball'd never land.

[they all raise a toast and exchange hugs and kisses at the stroke of midnight, wishing each other a happy New Year to the strains of Auld Lang Syne. The camera captures all six in a freeze frame before the final fade out]

Olga:

Colette Valois:
Hello, stranger.

Dean Lowrey:
Colette - hey! I'm really sorry we didn't get to connect before I left London.

Colette Valois:
No, that's all right. It gave me a chance to think.

Dean Lowrey:
And? Have you?

Colette Valois:
[pauses] Well, I'm still afraid of what Bridget's return means for you and I, [Dean nods] but for the first time in my life, I'm not going to let my fear get the better of me. [they both smile] I want to be with you, [Dean smiles broadly] as terrifying as that is. I just hope that...

Dean Lowrey:
No-no-no-no, I-I do. I want to be with you. too. [caresses her arm as they keep smiling at each other] I'm so sorry, I need to...

Colette Valois:
Oh - brief the crew?

Dean Lowrey:
Right.

Colette Valois:
Of course.

Dean Lowrey:
But-but when we get to Russia, can we...

Colette Valois:
Talk more?

Dean Lowrey:
Yeah.

Colette Valois:
Please.

Dean Lowrey:
[gathers his belongings and squeezes her arm affectionately] See you soon. [Colette keeps looking in Dean's direction, still smiling as he walks off]

Dean Lowrey:
What's going on over there?

Colette Valois:
Battle of the sexes.

Dean Lowrey:
Ohhhhh. Best one win?

Colette Valois:
Of course!

Dean Lowrey:
Ted! [Ted turns and starts to walk back towards Dean] Right place at the right time. That's how I jumped the line. I was downtown, headquarters, I got stuck in an elevator with Juan Trippe for 11 minutes. I figured, I got nothing to lose, so I told him what I thought about his pilot seniority system. And I asked him, I said, "Do you want to be part of the past, or do you want to be part of the future?" WWII vets versus what's happening right now with you and me - the jet age. Sometimes you just get lucky.

Ted Vanderway:
Now we make our own luck, Captain. Sometimes you just got to step up. [Dean starts to walk away] Buy you a drink?

Dean Lowrey:
Twist my arm?

Ted Vanderway:
Please - no more violence.

Laura Cameron:
Kate, you're not even giving me a chance.

Kate Cameron:
Do do what, Laura? To be me?

Laura Cameron:
In case you forgotten, I got this job on my own merits.

Kate Cameron:
Then act like it. You want get out. You want to have a job. You want to see the world. That is great, but do you know what that makes you? A grown-up, so grow up.

Laura Cameron:
It's so easy for you. No one ever expected anything from you.

Kate Cameron:
Excuse me?

Laura Cameron:
You always got to do exactly what you wanted.

Kate Cameron:
Yeah, Laura, I did! I did. I did what I wanted. I did what I really wanted to do, but now...

Laura Cameron:
Now I'm doing what you wanted and you still don't want me here!

Kate Cameron:
No, Laura! That's not the point! I just want you to stand on your own two feet!

Laura Cameron:
I am trying!

Kate Cameron:
You're wearing bunny slippers! You're wearing bunny slippers! You're 22-years-old and you're still wearing a child's bunny slippers!

Laura Cameron:

Dean Lowrey:
Ready for Germany?

Colette Valois:
That's the rumor. Are you preparing to toast the President?

Dean Lowrey:
With anything but whiskey. I'm laying off the stuff for a while

Colette Valois:
Are you?

Dean Lowrey:
Oh, yeah. And cigarettes. I've been told that they lead to dancing.

Colette Valois:
I'm surprised you remember.

Dean Lowrey:
I remember having a lot of whiskey - and stepping on your foot. You seem to be walking OK, so I guess, uh...

Colette Valois:
It was a moment, Captain. A nice moment, but that was all.

Dean Lowrey:
[steadies Colette after she stumbles on the steps to the plane and nearly loses her balance] You OK?

Colette Valois:
I'm fine, thank you.

Dean Lowrey:
[sensing all is not well with Colette] You sure?

Colette Valois:
No. I owe you an apology. I didn't mean to embarrass you...

Dean Lowrey:
[shakes his head, as if to shrug it off] What are they gonna do, kick us out of the country? We're leaving.

Colette Valois:
It was a terrible mistake.

Dean Lowrey:
What - the party or the singing?

Colette Valois:
Coming to Berlin... at all. [Colette boards the plane first and Dean follows her a few seconds later]

Dean Lowrey:
What'd you think of the flight?

Colette Valois:
Takeoff was good, but the landing was bad. [they both laugh]

Dean Lowrey:
You were right, you know.

Colette Valois:
About what?

Dean Lowrey:
Back when we were on the ground in Haiti. I thought I was coming apart at the seams.

Colette Valois:
You were wonderful.

Dean Lowrey:
I didn't think we were going to make it out of there.

Colette Valois:
But we did.

Dean Lowrey:
Well, you were right about rescuing the girl. I never would have forgiven myself.

Colette Valois:
You don't need to say it. You saved us.

Dean Lowrey:
Yeah, but you saved me.

Colette Valois:
Does this mean I earned my wings?

Dean Lowrey:
[shakes his head] Not yet. [they kiss]

Colette Valois:
I can't believe we're hooking.

Dean Lowrey:
[looks at her for a moment, then chuckles] We're not - we're not hooking...

Colette Valois:
What?

Dean Lowrey:
We're playing hookey. What you just said means something else entirely.

Colette Valois:
What did I say?

Dean Lowrey:
It involves charging by the hour.

Colette Valois:
Oh! [Dean laughs] No.

Dean Lowrey:
You know that is the most useful thing you said all day!

Ted Vanderway:
It is? Well then I met my quota!

Colette Valois:
Good to be back in New York?

Dean Lowrey:
Yeah. [looks through his pockets]

Colette Valois:
Did you lose something?

Dean Lowrey:
I had a tin of aspirin.

Colette Valois:
Monte Carlo - always too much of a party.

Dean Lowrey:
Too much of something.

Colette Valois:
High wire, perhaps? Always loved walking it myself, although sometimes it's helpful to have a net.

Dean Lowrey:
Where's the fun in that?

Ted Vanderway:
See that table over there? That is natural selection at work, my friend. They don't know that they're a new breed of woman. They just had a natural impulse. To take flight.

Colette Valois:
Tomorrow another plane takes off to someplace new. Vanished, today's mistakes. Their only trace: a touch more wisdom.

Maggie Ryan:
I think I understand you better in French. [peals of laughter]

Maggie Ryan:
[enters the cockpit] Can we roll out, gentlemen? I'm getting tired of waiting.

Dean Lowrey:
Maggie!

Maggie Ryan:
[in amazement] Dean? You're a captain now?

Ted Vanderway:
Did you just fly in on a helicopter?

Maggie Ryan:
Oh, well, I like to make an entrance.

Dean Lowrey:
Uh, where's - where's Bridget?

Maggie Ryan:
I don't know. They just called me to fill in.

Ted Vanderway:
Yeah? Who's filling in the rest of her? [laughs]

Maggie Ryan:
[gestures at Ted] He won't be doing any actual flying, will he?

Dean Lowrey:
Well, welcome aboard, Maggie.

Maggie Ryan:
Thanks. [leaves the cockpit and closes the door behind her]

Maggie Ryan:
[watches Colette take a swig from a champagne bottle in the galley] Thirsty?

Colette Valois:
An American man would say something, no?

Maggie Ryan:
Depends on the subject.

Colette Valois:
Family in Row 5 and 6... he's married.

Maggie Ryan:
Oh. Did you ask?

Colette Valois:
No, I don't care. I was only surprised.

Maggie Ryan:
Oh. Well, good. OK. That's very French of you. Should we spike his food or his drink?

Colette Valois:
Both.

Laura Cameron:
[admiring the plane's interior while Kate and Colette are busy straightening things up] It's beautiful.

Colette Valois:
Brand new - never been flown.

Ted Vanderway:
[enters the plane] What do you think, ladies? Can we make this work?

Laura Cameron:
Are you our pilot?

Ted Vanderway:
One of them.

Kate Cameron:
No, he's our co-pilot.

Ted Vanderway:
First Officer. First Officer.

Sanjeev:
Fuel quantity checked.

Ted Vanderway:
[maneuvers the yoke in front of him] Flight controls free and correct.

Dean Lowrey:
[enters the cockpit] You ready, boys?

Ted Vanderway:
Hey-hey-hey, you nervous? 'Cause I can take that seat if you're nervous.

Dean Lowrey:
Thanks, Ted, but Pan Am wants actual pilots in the left seat. [grins broadly as he takes the coveted left seat for the first time as a captain, savoring the moment]

Maggie Ryan:
So - who else do we have?

Colette Valois:
[shows the flight crew manifest to Maggie, who takes it] A new hire - she's in back.

Maggie Ryan:
[reading from the manifest] Laura... Cameron?

Kate Cameron:
My sister. I can't seem to escape her.

Maggie Ryan:
They put you two on the same flight?

Kate Cameron:
[holds up a copy of Life Magazine with Laura's photo on the cover] Hmmmmm.

Maggie Ryan:
Wasn't that something?

Maggie Ryan:
[reacting to the news that Bridget has resigned from Pan Am] Bridget loves Pan Am. She wouldn't quit.

Ted Vanderway:
Never trust a radio. They once lost track of me for three weeks in Brazil. [pauses] Unless...

Maggie Ryan:
What?

Ted Vanderway:
She'd have to quit if she got married!

Dean Lowrey:
Uh, who? What, Bridget?

Ted Vanderway:
Oh Dean, the whole company knows about you two.

Sanjeev:
I didn't know.

Ted Vanderway:
Everybody but Sanjeev knows about you two. Did you get engaged? [Dean smiles and raises his eyebrows. Ted punches him playfully on the shoulder] Aw, you son of a b*tch!

Maggie Ryan:
Congratulations. [leaves the cockpit]

Sanjeev:
If you're engaged, why is she in London?

Ted Vanderway:
Oh, who knows where that woman ever is? She barely made it on the plane in Cuba.

Sanjeev:
She was in Cuba?

Ted Vanderway:
We all were. Flew out the last DC-6 full of released Bay of Pigs prisoners for Uncle Sam.

Sanjeev:
Plane with a mutiny?

Ted Vanderway:
Heh-heh-heh.

Dean Lowrey:
[dreamily] That wasn't a mutiny.

Ginny Saddler:
Men's socks, the way to a woman's heart.

Dean Lowrey:
Sure - yeah, run along boys! I'll stay... fly the plane.

Colette Valois:
Oh, no need to be jealous. I said Kate was taking her clothes off, but I didn't say who was putting them on.

Dean Lowrey:
Ugh - sailors!

Colette Valois:
If you want a quick look, I'd be happy to take over.

Dean Lowrey:
No, thank you. I'm-I'm happy right where I am.

Colette Valois:
Too bad - it's always been a dream of mine... to fly.

[Dean looks at Colette, who smiles and mischievously twitches her eyes once. Dean looks away, thinking about it while Colette never takes her eyes off him. Finally Dean extends his arm, gesturing for Colette to sit in the right hand seat as he glances quickly at the cockpit door]

Dean Lowrey:
Excuse me, First Officer Valois, could you please take your seat?

[Colette giggles, sets her tray down and takes Ted's seat]

Dean Lowrey:
And there's actually... some gray area here. The singing guardians of democracy back there are not technically paying passengers

[Colette swoons, not quite believing what is about to happen]

Dean Lowrey:
and they're sworn to protect your right to the pursuit of happiness.

Colette Valois:
Oh, this would make me very happy.

Dean Lowrey:
Yeah?

Colette Valois:
Yeah.

Dean Lowrey:
[pauses for a long moment and exhales loudly, knowing he'd be in big trouble if anyone were to find out about this] Both hands on the yoke.

Colette Valois:
The yoke?

Dean Lowrey:
Yeah, the... steering wheel.

Colette Valois:
Roger that, Captain.

[grasps the yoke in front of her with both hands. Dean disengages the autopilot and slowly lifts his hands off his yoke]

Colette Valois:
[looks over at Dean momentarily] I'm flying!

Dean Lowrey:
[chuckles] Your dream comes true.

[looks over at Colette]

Colette Valois:
[smiles broadly as she realizes she really is flying the plane] I'm flying!

[laughs]

Ted Vanderway:
[hears the commotion as Colette enters the cockpit to serve coffee] What the hell is going on out there?

Dean Lowrey:
I don't even want to know.

Colette Valois:
Oh, it is nothing. Kate's taking off her clothes to entertain the men. [Dean takes a cup of coffee from Colette's tray]

Ted Vanderway:
And why would she do that?

Colette Valois:
Feeling patriotic, I guess.

Ted Vanderway:
[climbs up out of his chair] What does a guy got to do to get a decent cup of coffee around here?

Colette Valois:
Oh...

Ted Vanderway:
Oh, don't bother, Colette. I'll get my own.

Colette Valois:
OK. [Ted leaves the cockpit]

Sanjeev:
[takes off his headphones] I like coffee, too.

Colette Valois:
Mmm. [Sanjeev leaves the cockpit, too]

Kate Cameron:
[shakes two tablets out of a plastic container into her hand] This is getting out of hand - it's like feeding time at the zoo!

Colette Valois:
Can you imagine being trapped under water with them for six months?

Maggie Ryan:
I'd load myself into a torpedo tube and launch!

Dean Lowrey:
[pours himself some coffee] That bad?

Maggie Ryan:
My kingdom for a sedative!

Dean Lowrey:
[to Colette] How snockered are they?

Colette Valois:
What are you thinking?

Dean Lowrey:
Nifty little pilot trick. I'm going to decrease the cabin pressure by manually raising the cabin altitude.

Maggie Ryan:
I love Greek - beautiful language!

Dean Lowrey:
It makes boozy passengers fall asleep.

Kate Cameron:
[in amazement] You're kidding!

Dean Lowrey:
No - that's why test pilots don't drink on game day.

Maggie Ryan:
Pilots and their secrets! [Dean makes eye contact with Colette, who gives him a big smile] Well, what are you waiting for?

Colette Valois:
Are we in for some bad weather?

Dean Lowrey:
It's October - 'tis the season.

Colette Valois:
If you need any help in the cockpit, I do have experience.

Dean Lowrey:
So one lesson and now you're the expert?

Colette Valois:
Well, experts are only appreciated as much as amateurs - it loses its thrill.

Colette Valois:
Quite an evening.

Dean Lowrey:
Really? Miss something?

Colette Valois:
Some bad weather. [looks at Dean for a moment, then kisses him]

Charles Moore:
You're letting a stewardess talk to the control tower?

Ted Vanderway:
Do you speak French?

Charles Moore:
[flips switches from the left seat] The wind has increased on our tail and the temperature has dropped. We can't take off. [moves back to his seat]

Ted Vanderway:
Cut the pep talk, Chuck.

Dean Lowrey:
[bursts into the cockpit and takes the left seat] How's our fuel?

Charles Moore:
We've lost 6,000 pounds. Add that to our garage sale and we're down to about 200,000 pounds.

Ted Vanderway:
[straps himself in] Still not enough to fit into our prom dress.

Charles Moore:
We need to burn more fuel - a lot more.

Dean Lowrey:
No, there's no time. Setting brakes. [sets the brakes] Setting takeoff thrust. [sets thrust to maximum]

Ted Vanderway:
Takeoff thrust set.

Charles Moore:
Captain, it is my duty to tell you that based on FAA rules and regulations, it is too dangerous to take off!

Dean Lowrey:
Yeah, noted.

Ted Vanderway:
We've taken off from aircraft carriers shorter than this!

Charles Moore:
In a fighter jet. A 707 isn't designed to take off like this!

Dean Lowrey:
Fighter jets don't have four engines.

Charles Moore:
If we don't blow an engine first!

Ted Vanderway:
You need to change your diaper, Chuck. I mean, you're embarrassing the navy here.

Charles Moore:
Ted, I'm just trying to...

Ted Vanderway:
It's not Ted - it's First Officer Vanderway and sitting next to me is Captain Lowrey. He makes the decisions on this aircraft without ANY interference from you! Am I understood?

Charles Moore:
Yes, sir! [Ted and Dean exchange looks]

Maggie Ryan:
[walks along the runway with a flashlight in her right hand, behind Dean, who's pacing] You're counting. Why are you counting? [Dean doesn't answer, but holds up his left index finger] The runway - it's too short?

Dean Lowrey:
That stays out here.

Maggie Ryan:
How could it be too short? Pan Am used to land here all the time!

Dean Lowrey:
[lifts her arm by the flashlight and points it toward a large sinkhole] Hurricane left some scars.

Maggie Ryan:
How much is gone?

Dean Lowrey:
Too much for a loaded 707.

Maggie Ryan:
So we can't take off? [Dean doesn't answer, but walks back toward the plane while Maggie approaches the sinkhole for a better look]

Dean Lowrey:
[closes the trunk lid] You have to stay on the right side of the road.

Colette Valois:
I am French, not English.

Dean Lowrey:
I'm fairly confident this is a bad idea. [sits down in the front passenger seat]

Colette Valois:
Aw, come on. What are you afraid of?

Dean Lowrey:
Where do I start? [Dean is about to hand her the keys, but pulls them away at the last second] Wait, before we do this, do you have any questions?

Colette Valois:
Only one - how fast does it go?

Dean Lowrey:
That's the wrong question! [opens the passenger side door and steps out of the car]

Colette Valois:
[in a singsong voice] We had a deal! [holds out her hand and gestures for the keys. Dean reluctantly hands Colette the keys] Thank you. [starts the engine]

Dean Lowrey:
[sighs out loud as he sits down and closes the door] You have your license on you, right?

Colette Valois:
[revs the engine] What license? [shifts into drive and floors the accelerator]

Ted Vanderway:
So if a dame left you without word - no, "It was fun," no, "We'll always have Paris," you'd go searching for her.

Sanjeev:
I didn't say that. Hell, no.

Ted Vanderway:
There you go.

Sanjeev:
That is, unless... she was the love of my life. [Dean looks away dejectedly]

Ted Vanderway:
[Colette knocks on the cockpit door and enters with a dinner tray] What kind of name is Metropolitans, anyway, for a brand new ballclub?

Sanjeev:
Stengel didn't do too bad for you boys in the Bronx.

Ted Vanderway:
Yeah, until he went senile.

Dean Lowrey:
[Colette hands the tray to Dean, smiling] Dinner already?

Colette Valois:
Well, a deal is a deal. [Dean smiles back at her as she leaves]

Ted Vanderway:
And who pitches Whitey Ford... until Game 3 - what deal?

Dean Lowrey:
[spots Colette's taxi on the side of the road with a flat tire while Colette is standing forward of the taxi with her luggage, fanning herself with her hat] Morning, Miss, couldn't help but notice your predicament.

Colette Valois:
Unfortunate, no? Are you going my way?

Dean Lowrey:
Uh, it depends. Where are you going?

Colette Valois:
Me? Paree [smiles]

Dean Lowrey:
[feigns amazement] You've got to be kidding me. I'm going to Paris.

Colette Valois:
You don't say!

Dean Lowrey:
Sometimes the stars align. Say, I could give you a lift, [Colette bends over to pick up her suitcase] but I'll have to warn you. [Colette stops and looks at Dean, still bent over] You have to cook my dinner, bring me coffee, make occasional small talk.

Colette Valois:
[stands up straight] Some steep demands.

Dean Lowrey:
It's a long walk to Paris.

Colette Valois:
[turns her head to the right, appearing to think it over, then turns to look at Dean] Fine! On one small condition. [Dean raises his eyebrows]

Dean Lowrey:
[waiting for his turn to use the lavatory] I'm surprised you haven't asked to take the helm yet.

Colette Valois:
Oh, the night is young. [smiles]
