South of Nowhere

South of Nowhere

South of Nowhere is an American teen drama television series created by Thomas W. Lynch. Aimed primarily at teenagers, it first aired on November 4, 2005 and was one of six original series on The N. The second half of the third and final season aired October 10, 2008 and the final episode aired on December 12, 2008. Live webisodes were also created to accompany each episode in the season 2 storyline, and were seen exclusively through The N's website on the Click. The show follows the lives of the members of the Carlin family (Paula, Arthur, Glen, Clay, and Spencer) as they adjust to moving from Ohio to Los Angeles, California. One of the main focuses include the relationship between Spencer Carlin (Gabrielle Christian) and her bisexual friend, Ashley Davies (Mandy Musgrave). The close friendship between Ashley and Spencer led Spencer to question her own sexuality, a subject which created controversy before the show first aired. It was the first series on The N to deal with such a subject relating to the primary characters. South of Nowhere was positively reviewed by Variety, Boston Globe, The New York Times, among others.

Ashley Davies:
It feels like everything is perfect again, doesn't it?

[Ashley leans forward to kiss Spencer again, but she pulls away]

Spencer Carlin:
No.

Ashley Davies:
No?

[Spencer sighs and turns away, looking down at the floor]

Ashley Davies:
Wait, what is it?

Spencer Carlin:
I was so in love with you, Ash.

Ashley Davies:
Was?

Spencer Carlin:
You broke my heart, Ash. When you and Aiden were together at the prom...

Ashley Davies:
No, no, no... nothing happened between me and Aiden. I told you that.

Spencer Carlin:
I guess that doesn't even matter now. I mean... when you were in Europe, you didn't even call me back for weeks. It was like... like out of sight, out of mind.

Ashley Davies:
No, God! That's not even what it was...

Spencer Carlin:
My brother died, and you just... you just left!

Ashley Davies:
Look, I know I was stupid, I told you that, okay? I don't do death well, you know that! I swear every night I was away it was great because you were in my dreams. But every morning I woke up it sucked because you wouldn't be there. I know that sounds cliche, but it's true.

Spencer Carlin:
[Shakes her head] I hate this.

Ashley Davies:
I love you. [louder] Spencer, I love you.

Spencer Carlin:
It's not enough.

Ashley Davies:
What does that mean?

Spencer Carlin:
Look, I just can't be with you and commit to you and then have you pull away again.

Ashley Davies:
I'm not going to! And I want you and only you!

Spencer Carlin:
You don't know what you want.

Ashley Davies:
Stop it!

Spencer Carlin:
And I don't know if you'll ever know. And it's too confusing... and... and complicated... and... and it hurts way too much.

Ashley Davies:
Don't do this!

Spencer Carlin:
Look, I'm sorry.

Spencer Carlin:
Yes.

Kyla Woods:
Hey, Ash - oh [laughs] . I'm sorry, I'm sorry. I just um- I just wanted to see if you wanted to get something to eat with me and Aiden.

Ashley Davies:
Hey. um, did they teach you to knock in Baltimore? Oh my bad. You probably didn't have a door on your trailer.

Kyla Woods:
Oh, good one, good one, I'll give that one an eight, but you've done better.

Ashley Davies:
I'll work on it.

Kyla Woods:
I'm really sorry. Spencer, I didn't know that you were here.

Spencer Carlin:
Yeah, I'm here, just being here.

Kyla Woods:
Okay, so do you guys want to go get some food with me and Aiden?

Ashley Davies:
No. Get Out.

Kyla Woods:
Okay. [Aiden stays in the room and stares at Ashley and Spencer] .

Aiden Dennison:
Well, uh, don't mind me. Just go along with what you were doin', Oh! [Kyla yanks him out of the room] .

Ashley Davies:
[laughing] He's so pathetic.

Spencer Carlin:
Not really. Just thinks we're hot together, I agree.

Ashley Davies:
Do not encourage him. [Spencer's cell phone rings] .

Spencer Carlin:
Hi, mom. Um. nothin' much. Eh, yeah, I'll be home by eleven, um, no, I'm just with uh, Aiden, Kyla and uh, Ashley, getting something to eat. Okay, love you too, bye.

Ashley Davies:
You lied? I like it.

Spencer Carlin:
God, I don't. I just feel so terrible lying to my parents. And I hate lying about us. It really hurts.

Ashley Davies:
So tell 'em, theres never gonna be a good time to do it. Just expect hell, because once you tell them and they know for sure. They're probably gonna want to send ypu to some gay detox camp.

Spencer Carlin:
You're kidding, right?

Ashley Davies:
I wish I was.

Spencer Carlin:
They have those places? God, why does everyone care so much who I'm in love with?

Ashley Davies:
Or who I'm in love with?

Ashley Davies:
Come on, you have to do this for me.

Spencer Carlin:
You've got plenty of other people confessing their most intimate experiences, you don't need me.

Ashley Davies:
Yes, I do. C'mon, there's a way uneven balance, There are more no-times than first-times. And, plus, when my film becomes a cult classic, you'll be sitting on the sidelines, depressed.

Spencer Carlin:
I don't think it's right to document everything we do. I mean, maybe it's the privacy and intimacy that keeps special moments special?

Ashley Davies:
No, you're special. That's why I love you. [Spencer pushes the camcorder down in Ashley's hand]. Okay, fine. Now tell me about your first time, like, as a rehearsal.

Spencer Carlin:
No, and, um, no. Hey, Aiden. [Aiden walks up to Ashley and Spencer distracted by something on his cell phone].

Ashley Davies:
What?

Aiden Dennison:
[Spencer grabs his cell phone to see what he's looking at] I swear. I didn't see anything.

Spencer Carlin:
Oh, right. Yeah, wait. I was trying to find a good time to tell you about that.

Ashley Davies:
[Ashley grabs Aiden's cell phone from Spencer and see's a picture of herself naked] Okay, how about the minute you found out? Where did you get this from?

Aiden Dennison:
I don't know. Somebody did a mass spam to the school's student body... of your body. [the picture starts appearing on everyone's computer's and cell phones] .

Spencer Carlin:
Uh, Ash, you okay?

Ashley Davies:
Yeah, that's right! It's me! Woooo! Are we all happy? [the entire school cheers] .

Spencer Carlin:
Now what?

Ashley Davies:
We have to get the hell outta here.

Creep:
You girls need a lift someplace?

Spencer Carlin:
No thanks.

Creep:
Is that your car I saw broken down on the side of the road back there? Y'know, if you've got a flat, I got some stuff to fix it in the trunk.

Spencer Carlin:
Uh, no thanks. We're okay.

Creep:
It's not safe out here, y'know. Pretty girls like you. C'mon... get in.

Ashley Davies:
Get in! Get in! Go! [Ashley and Spencer run into the diner and lock themselves inside it] .

Creep:
[wrapping on the window] Hey... I see you in there!

Arthur Carlin:
It was them. They were here. And you didn't see anyone come in or out of this room? Okay, thanks for your help. What do I owe you for this? Three-seventy-five for a candy bar?

Spencer Carlin:
[whispers to Ashley] Give me your cell phone!

Creep:
Hey.

Spencer Carlin:
Dad? I need you to come get us! We're at some diner, off some road called Vangley, please hurry!

Arthur Carlin:
[wrapping on the window] Spencer?

Spencer Carlin:
DAD?

Arthur Carlin:
Spencer!

Spencer Carlin:
Dad! [hugs her Dad for saving her and Ashley] .

Arthur Carlin:
Oh. it's okay honey. I , got you, baby. Dad's here, Ashley, you okay?

Ashley Davies:
I am now Mr.C.

Spencer Carlin:
Dad, I know what your gonna say and...

Arthur Carlin:
I'm sorry.

Spencer Carlin:
[looking confused] Maybe I don't.

Arthur Carlin:
Spence, I'm so sorry I haven't beeen there for you. I'm sorry that you felt like your home was a place that you couldn't be yourself. A place you had to get away from.

Spencer Carlin:
Dad...

Arthur Carlin:
But that stops right now. I'm going to protect you, both of you. The best way I can, but running away isn't the answer. Hey I raised a fighter, I'll be damned If I'm gonna let you prove me wrong.

Aiden Dennison:
Do you have any idea what I've done for you today? Let's see. I set up your plasma, I hooked up your surround sound, I moved you furniture - ...

Ashley Davies:
Okay, so you don't wanna go, tonight.

Aiden Dennison:
No, I don't wanna go tonight or any other night.

Ashley Davies:
What does that mean?

Aiden Dennison:
I'm done, alright. I'm done being your handyman. I'm done being your back-up date. I'm done!

Ashley Davies:
Where's all this coming from?

Aiden Dennison:
People got shot, Ashley? People got hurt, people died and you walked away from it and none if it, none of it, even touched you.

Ashley Davies:
Of course it did.

Aiden Dennison:
Look at you. You're the same person you were before this happened. You didn't even stay around long enough to see who's standing and who wasn't. [beat] Spencer may have forgiven you, but I haven't. [heads for the door]

Ashley Davies:
Oh, wait a minute! When Spencer dumped me, you came to me and you knew exactly who I was.

Aiden Dennison:
And that makes it okay?

Ashley Davies:
No, okay. I'm sorry. I suck. I'm a terrible person. What more do you want me to say?

Aiden Dennison:
'Sorry' isn't good enough.

Ashley Davies:
I gotta go. [turns to leave]

Aiden Dennison:
Yeah. Go. Leave. 'Cuz that's what you do best. You leave, 'cuz you can't deal. You're gay when it's convinient, you're straight when you want me around.

Ashley Davies:
It is so not even like that.

Aiden Dennison:
It is like that! You know what? Wear your little dress and got to your stupid club. Have sex with Lily Allen or whoever else. I don't care. But do me a favor. Next time you have an emergency, call 911. [leaves]

[softly] I love you. [Raising her voice] Spencer, I love you!

Spencer Carlin:
It's not enough!

Ashley Davies:

Ashley Davies:
Are you okay?

Spencer Carlin:
Yeah... are you?

Ashley Davies:
[groans as she sits up] Last night was rough. You came to take care of me?

Spencer Carlin:
Was there an option?

Ashley Davies:
Yeah. The one most people do when they're around me... leave.

Spencer Carlin:
No way. Then life would be just too predictable.

Ashley Davies:
How do I look?

Spencer Carlin:
Good...

Ashley Davies:
You suck at lying. [Spencer laughs] . But I'm glad you try.

Christine Davies:
Rise and shine darling... I'm heading out for the day, and I might not be home tonight. Really, Ashley I tolerate your playmates, but do they have to be here in the morning?

Spencer Carlin:
Oh, I'm sorry. I just fell asleep.

Ashley Davies:
You remember my friend Spencer. Right Mom?

Christine Davies:
Right. Look , honey I can't leave you if you insist on bringing home this kind of..."friend".

Spencer Carlin:
Actually, I just came to take care of her.

Christine Davies:
And I'm sure you did that very well.

Ashley Davies:
Mom, can you please just try to be nice?

Christine Davies:
Oh, I have been. To Paige who stole my credit cards. To Elizabeth, who passed out eating my Valium. And then there was the one with the piercings, she just moved in and we had to have the help get rid of her. Here this ought to cover you until I get home. Ciao.

Ashley Davies:
I'm sorry.

Spencer Carlin:
Is this how it is every morning?

Ashley Davies:
No. That only happens once a month... when I see her.

Spencer Carlin:
Did you really sleep with all those girls?

Ashley Davies:
Those are just the ones she found out about. [sees Spencer sigh sadly]. None of them meant anything.

Spencer Carlin:
And that makes it better?
